Spring 2008 Catalina Artists Studio Tour Featured Artist,
Linda Valder

Most of my childhood was spent in the farming and ranching areas of rural Southeast Arizona, where my grandparents and great-grandparents settled about a hundred years ago.  We lived in the country, far past the end of the pavement.  Watching for snakes, and living with nature was our ordinary way of life.  The birds and wildlife I saw then, like coyotes, eagles, and lizards, now make their way into my pictures and paintings.

Using oil paints, I paint impressionistic pictures of Southeast Arizona, trying to convey the impact of this harsh, austere beauty.  My landscape paintings are often, so to speak, portraits of mountains and clouds.  I also make layered paper creations, featuring the creatures of the Southwest in a more fanciful way.  These works are made with pens, inks, and acrylic paints.

My formal art training includes classes at Arizona State University, and the College of Santa Fe.  I have a B.A. in anthropology from Arizona State University.

From the Catalina Community Arts Council;
A heart-felt thanks to all who helped make the November 2007 Catalina Artists' Studio Tour such a success!

To our sponsors- your financial support enabled us to publish a professional-quality guidebook and to advertise the tour in publications throughout Arizona.  We truely appreciate your confidence in us, and thanks to you, the turnout this year was phenomonal.

To our Silent Auction volunteers- The time you spent at the sight to greet visitors and answer their questions is much appreciated by the Council and the contributing artists.  The money raised at that venue will be returned to the Catalina community over the coming months in the form of arts education and support.

To our artists- This event benefits the whole community by putting Catalina on the map as a place for artistic inspiration and by helping to instill appreciation for the arts throughout our community and beyond.  Thank YOU for what you do!

The History of CAST
(submitted by the Catalina Community Arts Council)

Richard Hornby and Linda Allyn are glass artists and owners of Fire Ranch Glassworks & Gallery, located on Hawser Street in Catalina.  Richard and Linda are both native Tucsonans who moved to Catalina in 1999.  They came for the rural setting, the beautiful views, and a peaceful environment in which they could create their art.

During the construction of Fire Ranch, many neighbors stopped by to inquire about what was being built and to introduce themselves.  Rich and Linda were surprised and pleased to discover a real sense of community surrounding them.

After settling in, they decided to hold a Holiday Open House for their new neighbors.  This open house evolved into an annual event and the couple was surprised to discover that they were living in a community filled with many artists.

In 2003, the couple decided to see if any neighboring artists would be interested in opening their studios in a combined effort to showcase the arts in Catalina.  There was a call to artists and the response was impressive with the first year's tour including over 20 artists at a dozen locations.  The guidebook for that initial event was a single page map and artists guide.

The Tour has continued to grow with this year's Fall Tour featuring 49 artists at 19 locations.  The guidebook has evolved into a beautifully published directory of local artists with samples of their work, and a listing of the generous community sponsors of the event.
