Opening The Way: The Process of Empowerment
A
Therapeutic Model After Brain Injury and Trauma
The phrase, "Opening the Way", came
to me some thirty years ago while assisting women giving birth in the peaceful and loving environments of their own homes.
I saw their courage overcome their fears as they opened themselves to the new life coming through them, from the darkness
of the unknown, into the light and love of a new beginning. Through birth, we transform from water beings into human beings. It is a shared journey of letting go and pushing forward with determination. It was some years later that I was asked to work with a man who was
recovering from surgery for a massive brain tumor. We became guides for each other as he navigated the fear of his own dark
unknown, learning how to walk and talk again, and slowly emerging into a new person. This too was a birthing, a transformation.
One might even say that he survived a new Self. Through his journey, and then witnessing similar journeys of others with brain
injury, I learned so much. I was taught the true meaning of gratitude and how precious each moment of our life is and how
truly fragile we are as human beings. It has been and continues to be an honor to guide and be guided through others'
healing journeys in this way. Through my own opening the way, I began to write, The Process of Empowerment: A
Therapeutic Model After Brain Injury. The
Process of Empowerment: A Therapeutic Model After Brain Injury invites you on a journey, through words and pictures,
about human courage, perseverance and self-empowerment. It is about the potential for the healing of body, mind and spirit
after brain injury and trauma. Each of us has
a story to tell. We need stories to open our hearts. We speak...we listen...and realize that we are not alone in our suffering. The potential for self-empowerment lives within us. Once activated, it becomes
a transformational and healing force. I hope these pages will inspire you on your healing journey and bring you encouragement,
joy, and peace. In gratitude, Meira Yaer The Process of Empowerment
